    Crisis support and helplines

InkKiln is an editorial Kiln for UK tattoo artists. The tattoo industry has no dedicated UK helpline, so this page brings together the general support lines that matter most to working artists: mental health, grief, trans-affirming support, safeguarding, and addiction recovery. If life is at immediate risk, call 999. None of the lines below replace professional or emergency help.

    Mental health

Working alone, long hours, client emotional load, and the financial precarity of self-employment all sit on top of whatever else you carry. These lines are for any artist who needs to talk to someone.

    • Samaritans

      116 123

      24/7, free from any phone

    • CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably)

      0800 58 58 58

      5pm to midnight, every day

    • Shout

      Text 85258

      24/7 text support

    • PAPYRUS

      0800 068 4141

      Under-35 suicide prevention

    Grief and bereavement

Loss of a client, a mentor, a family member, or a colleague hits harder in a one-chair studio than it does in a larger workplace. These lines offer bereavement support that is not generic mental health support.

    • Cruse Bereavement Support

      0808 808 1677

      9am to 5pm weekdays

    • Child Bereavement UK

      0800 02 888 40

      Bereaved children and families

    • Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide

      0300 111 5065

      Peer support

    • Samaritans

      116 123

      24/7, free from any phone

    Trans and LGBTQ+ support

For trans and LGBTQ+ artists, and for any artist working with trans and LGBTQ+ clients who needs guidance. Studio safeguarding for trans-affirming tattooing is covered in the relevant guides; these lines are general support.

    Safeguarding

If you suspect a client is being trafficked, exploited, abused, or is a child being brought in by someone else, these are the routes to report or to get advice. The duty to act exists regardless of how uncomfortable the conversation might be.

    Addiction recovery

Addiction is over-represented in trades that pay cash, work alone, and finish late. There is no dedicated UK tattoo industry helpline, so the general lines below are the relevant ones. None of them judge.

    Workplace incidents

If you have a needlestick injury, a sharps exposure, an anaphylactic reaction in the chair, or another serious workplace incident, the route is RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013), not a helpline.

    • HSE RIDDOR reporting

Online and phone routes for over-7-day injuries, dangerous occurrences and occupational diseases.

    • NHS 111

      111

      Non-emergency clinical advice.

    • Emergency

      999

      Immediate emergency.

Professional bodies (signposting only, not crisis services)

These bodies represent the UK tattoo trade. They are not crisis lines and do not provide mental-health, safeguarding, or addiction support. Listed here so you know they exist.

    • Tattoo and Piercing Industry Union (TPIU): industry representation
    • British Tattoo Artists Federation (BTAF): professional body
    • UK Tattoo Industry Association: sector representation

Helplines listed are not a substitute for professional or emergency help. If life is at immediate risk, call 999. This page is reviewed when InkKiln content is reviewed; if you spot an outdated number or a missing line, contact hello@kilnguides.co.uk.
