Who runs this site
This site is part of the Kiln Guides network — independent, plain-English guidance for self-employed people in the UK. Each Kiln vertical covers a different trade or profession; this one is no exception.
Day-to-day editorial sits with the named editor on our Editorial Standards page. Operationally, it's run by Kiln Guides Ltd. Per-Kiln verticals may carry their own editor; check the Editorial Standards page for the current named contact.
Why it exists
There's no shortage of trade-specific guidance online — but most of it is gated behind paywalls, locked to membership organisations, or published by people selling something. Kiln Guides exists to fill that gap with content that's free, plain English, well-sourced, and not for sale. Read our editorial standards for how we work.
How it's funded
Sponsorship — one company per category per vertical, clearly labelled, with no editorial control. Read How We Are Funded for the full model and the current sponsor list.
Editorial independence
We don't hide behind editorial independence statements. We publish the receipts:
